Aspects of Self

Posted by Aaron Rogerson

Below is a Venn diagram describing an example of the self referential titles we may assign ourselves in life as important parts of who we are. They all have a part to play in our perception of self and other as well as how we would like to grow as individuals. External titles such as "Father", "Brother", "Mother", "Sister" or "Friend" also have a part to play in our growth and perceptions of self and others but are more like relational reference points that describe our connection with one or more individuals. When relating with other in the past, I've been guilty of paying attention to the self referential parts in them that I may personally like while ignoring the parts that I don't like in order to avoid discomfort or in some circumstances avoid becoming insulted or "triggered".

When we don't consider a person in their authentic wholeness as impartially as possible we may avoid getting triggered in the present, but we then ignore potential opportunities for harmonious connection and friendship in the future. Truncated version of this information available here. .

About A Field Of Green

Posted by Aaron Rogerson
Mar 22 2024

"A Field Of Green" is a poem that I wrote in the 2010's describing a dream that I had, flavoured by experiences that I'd had in life up to that moment. In the dream I was in a prison with high chain link fences. A group of people were playing basketball (including myself) inside the prison. I became dissinterested in the game and decided to do a superman leap over the chain link fence into the surrounding areas. I walked through a literal field of greenery (in the dream) as well as inspecting a parked car at the end of a dirt track. The prison serves as a reminder of the hurt, resentments, or other feelings that we may be bottling up inside unexpressed.

In life I believe that we have numerous opportunities to learn about ourselves through introspection and mindfulness, including how we relate to others. It is the most precious connections we share but also the most difficult (at times) that leave the greatest imprints on our hearts and minds.

A Field of Green

In my bed I lie asleep,

To a field of green I did awake,

from a shared realm held of mind and matter.

I let the minders find me, alone in the field.

Returned to this place of communal space,

yet the field remained.

In my bed I lie asleep,

A field of green I did awake.

I love Greek salads, the rich flavours and textures of olives, fetta cheese, cucumber and tomatoes(I know a pre-prepared meal, but why reinvent the wheel if you don't need to).

How Our Names Have Significance

Posted by Aaron Rogerson
Mar 17 2024

How and what we name our children says much about what we want for them in life. Some names represent our yearning for them to have a special place in society and our hearts, such as the very rare names that are quite uncommon or share meaning with other words in English. Names such as "Grace" or "River Phoenix". Stage names, chosen by the person themselves represents who they want to be known as to society at large, while continuing to interact with family and friends using their given names as a special reminder to friends and family of who they are to them. Our names in life whether chosen by us, or in the case of carried down names such as most surnames have an influence on how we develop from childhood into adults, some more than others depending on our personalities - whether we are outgoing or introverted being examples.

In my immediate family, after the birth of our first son, Monique & I decided that we'd take turns naming our children. I named our first son Lucas, which meant at the time "The shining light". Monique named our second son Dylan, meaning "From the sea". And When our third and last son was born I named him Aiden, meaning "Little fire". Whether subconsciously or explicity our names have special significance in our lives. Understandably when changing our own given names legally this has special significance as it is a strong way of saying this is who I am now, the old me is now in the past.

This book that was published in 2010 by Hazel Courteney was one of the stand out books that I read that year. I very much appreciated her personal stories and insight. If you're interested in metaphysical things this is a good read. Link in image below:

This video describes the Novikov Principle brilliantly. Personally I believe that this solution makes the most sense if time travel of information into the past is indeed possible.

Acoustic Guitar

My son Dylan's guitar. I often think back to when he lived here with us, and had an interest in music. These days he's learning to become a pilot and is nearing his first solo flight.

Reminds me of my own musical interests over time. I was a drummer in a marching band for my school in the 80's. Later in life my Dad taught me some guitar chords when I was younger, but I never bought a guitar of my own. We briefly formed a family band in the 2010's in Darwin. These days Mum & Dad are nearing retirement and live not too far away.

I keep some of these Super Nature Wellness Bowls at home for when I'm not feeling like preparing an elaborate meal for myself. There are versions they make that include different ingredients though they are all a healthy option for when you're on the go.

Multiverse Theory

Posted by Aaron Rogerson
Mar 04 2024

The multiverse is the hypothetical set of all universes. Together, these universes are presumed to comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, energy, information, and the physical laws and constants that describe them. The different universes within the multiverse are called "parallel universes", "flat universes", "other universes", "alternate universes", "multiple universes", "plane universes", "parent and child universes"

I believe that multiverse theory is correct - instead of there being a single universe, there are multiple universes potentially with different physics and relational quantum mechanics.

Free Will

Posted by Aaron Rogerson
Mar 02 2024

This notion of free will where we have "the notional capacity or ability to choose between different possible courses of action unimpeded" and determinism "the view that all events in the universe, including human decisions and actions, are causally inevitable" is a topic of great philosophical debate and discussion.

Firstly, an all encompassing definition of terms may be difficult due to the debatable nature of consciousness itself. Great strides have been made since the early 20th century within the realms of quantum theory, which gives a reliable description of the nature and behaviour of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic levels. It describes causation as a set of probability distributions where outcomes are not fixed until waveform collapse occurs. So as free will is a function of both time (the possibility for change) and consciousness, operating within this reliable description of quantum theory, one could say that the existence of free will is correct.

Are there degrees of freedom though, an interplay between deterministic and non-deterministic qualities to reality? I would say that this approach has merit due to the changing nature of the probability distributions themselves. How likely is the outcome of an event, and does this event include a conscious observer or not? As our knowledge of quantum theory and consciousness improves our understanding of the relationship between free will and determinism will improve over time.
